“How ‘bout these?” Bolin asked his furry companion. Pabu climbed up his arm and over to the bouquet Bolin picked up. He gave it a whiff and scurried down his leg. Bolin inhaled the flowers and found that he himself was gagging. Pabu gave him a look of disgust. “Yeah, I know Pabu.” He put the flowers back in the vase. “Flowers should smell nice.”

Bolin looked through the selection of flowers again. There always seemed to be something wrong with each bouquet. Some smelled weird, were lopsided, not bright enough, too bright, not the right shade, etc. None of these flowers were perfect. And that’s what he needed. He needed to find the perfect flowers. She was a perfect gal and deserved nothing less than, well, perfection.

“Why don’t we talk a walk, buddy? Maybe we’ll get some inspiration.” Before he knew it, Pabu is back on his shoulder and his feet were leading him down the familiar path to the park. “What color flowers do you think she’d like?” Bolin asked him, entering the park. “Red, like you? Do you think she’d like red flowers?”

“What ‘bout yellow, like those turtle ducks?” He asked, looking out into the lake. “Or blue, like the water. Maybe even green like those lilies.” And then it hit him. Lilies.

There was a kind of flowers that he knew she would love. Panda Lilies. Bolin remembered hearing a story about how Avatar Aang himself got these flowers for his wife. If it was good enough for the Avatar, then it darn well was good enough for her.

Panda Lilies are found on volcanos. Or in them? He couldn’t quite remember where they’d be found but it was on a volcano, he was sure they’d be there.

“You look all wacked out and confused, young man,” a voice said close beside him. Bolin had to admit, Gommu scared him by just popping up out of nowhere. But Bolin laughed it off, showing that he was okay.

“Hey, Gommu,” He greeted his favorite hobo, “You wouldn’t happen to know where I could find a volcano in Republic City, would you?” Bolin knew the city like the back of his hand, but he was hoping he wasn’t overlooking or anything. The city was surrounded by mountains anyway. 

“Oh, I’m sorry, Bolin. They’re ain’t no volcanoes in a city like this.” Seeing Bolin’s now sad and hopeless expression, Gommu followed up, “Well, there is a volcano of some sort in the next town over. It’s inactive, so I doubt you’d want to go there …”

“I’m not going swimming in a volcano or anything,” Bolin assured him. “I just wanted to get some Panda Lilies for an, uh, friend of mine.” He didn’t want anybody to know who he was getting the flowers for.

“Panda Lilies? Why didn’t you just say so?” Gommu jumped into that bush of his and came out less than a minute later with a whole bouquet of the flowers.

“Wow! Thanks, Gommu.” Bolin didn’t dare question Gommu on how he conjured up those flowers.

Gommu smiled at Bolin’s expression and his job well done. “Is she pretty?  She’s a she, right?”

“Yeah, she’s a she,” Bolin admitted, “And, yes, she’s beautiful.”

“Do you love her?”

“Of course I do. She’s one of the best things in my life.”

“Does she know that?”

“I don’t know. I hope she does.”

“Just follow your heart, kid. She’ll be in your arms in no time.”

Bolin nodded at Gommu’s last words, doing his best not to break down right then and there. “Pabu, you stay here. I don’t know if I could bring you with me …” Pabu obeyed and clipped to Gommu’s head.

Bolin began his journey to visit her. There were a lot of people here and he was being mindful of them as he looked for her. He nearly ran to her once he saw where she was, where she always was. He knelt down beside her and placed the flowers on her bed. She’s just sleeping, he told himself.

“I’m so sorry,” he muttered out, the words echoing back to him. “I miss you, mom.”
